The options available to you will depend on your individual circumstances and where you are in the academic cycle.

If you are midway through the year:

You could apply to suspend your studies. When students suspend, they generally return to university at the same point the next academic year, which means no extra tuition fees will be due.

You can request to come back at the start of the academic year instead but, you may need to pay additional tuition fees.

For more information about suspending your studies, please see this article: How can I suspend my studies and when will I return?

If you have received your end-of-year results and have been given summer reassessment:

You can opt to resit next year instead, but you must request this before the relevant assessment deadlines.

Please see: Can I take my resits next year, rather than in the summer?

If you have already received your end-of-year results and failed:

You may have been given an opportunity to repeat units without attendance. Please see: I'm repeating without attendance, what can I access?

If you want to switch to repeating with attendance, you must request this before the new academic year. More information about this can be found here: Can I repeat the year with attendance? and What happens to my funding if I need to repeat a year?

Please note: you can only repeat assessments in which the University has given you a resit opportunity.

If you have received your end-of-year results and passed the year:

If you have passed the year, you cannot repeat any assessments except through the acceptance of an evidenced extension request or academic appeal.

If personal circumstances impacted your ability to submit your assessment (for example: a medical emergency or bereavement), you can apply for an evidenced extension. You will need to provide evidence for this.

Here is a step-by-step video guide should you need it, and the Assessments guidance page which contains lots of helpful information about extensions, including what forms of evidence are accepted and information on the possible outcomes.

If you feel the University made an error in the conduct of your assessment that has affected your result, you can submit an academic appeal. Please review the relevant guidance and submit a form. More information can be found on the webpage.
