The options available to you will depend on your individual circumstances and where you are in the academic cycle.
If you are midway through the year, you could apply to suspend your studies. When students suspend, they generally return to university at the same point the next academic year, which means no extra tuition fees will be due. However, you could request to come back at the start of the academic year instead but you may need to pay additional tuition fees. Your Programme Leader will usually make the decision on whether this can be granted, however, sometimes it may not be possible to accommodate this request for reasons outside of the Programme Leader’s control.
To apply for a suspension of studies, please use this form.
If you have already received your end-of-year results and failed, you may have been given an opportunity to repeat units without attendance. If you wish to switch to repeating with attendance, you must request this in advance of the new academic year by completing this form. Please note you can only repeat assessments in which the University has given you a resit opportunity.
If you have received your end-of-year results and have been given summer reassessment, you can opt to resit next year instead, but you must request this before the relevant assessment deadlines. To request this, please open a new enquiry.
If you have received your end-of-year results and passed the year, you won’t be granted any further opportunities to resit, except through the acceptance of a late evidenced extension request or academic appeal.
Evidenced extension request: if you feel that there have been circumstances that significantly affected your performance in your assessments (for example, a medical emergency or bereavement) please review the guidance. This guidance also includes examples of the permitted grounds for a successful request. Your request will need to be supported by suitable evidence from an impartial third party.
Academic appeal: If you feel the University made an error in the conduct of your assessment that has affected your result, you can submit an academic appeal. Please review the relevant guidance and form.
For further specialist, free and independent advice regarding any of the above, you can contact the Students’ Union Advice Centre. You can also contact the Student Hub for advice and information on the different processes.
